Mary Clare Campbell - BBN Member
How long have you been a BBN member?
Just about 12 months
Have you always been sporty or is this new to you?
I have always enjoyed sport from school until now but due family and work demands found it difficult to keep up a regular commitment to it. At school I played different sports but my favorite was always netball.
If you were sporty when you were younger and then stopped, why did you stop?
Stopped most and eventually all sports once I had my kids .
Who or what motivated you to start again?
One of my friend's daughter plays for the local club and she was invited to BBN, I came along to give her moral support .
I have always loved playing netball since Primary School and was quite excited to get a run about again.
How did you feel initially when you started BBN?
I really thought I wouldn't be able to catch a ball but I managed it. Everyone was really welcoming and thankfully very patient .
How often do you take part/train/do your sport each week and do you do it as part of a club/team, with friends or on your own?
I had stopped almost all my sport until I started BBN. I realized quickly I wanted to get fitter, my head knew where I should be but my body couldn't get there. I have since joined a local gym where I can do quick sessions when my boys are at their clubs . These sessions vary from week to week depending on work commitments.
How do you feel when you are doing it?
I feel really fantastic when playing - not sure my play matches up but I can see I have improved due to the patience of my coach and other players.
How has netball/BBN enhanced your life?
Playing netball has encouraged me to get fitter and even lose some weight. I have grown in confidence in my play but most of all it is one of the few occasions women can get together and play as a team.It is also really good fun.
What are your biggest motivations?
My biggest motivations are a combination of staying fit, loosing weight , being with team mates and improving my game.
What were or are your biggest obstacles to taking part regularly and how do you overcome them?
It is often difficult to juggle family and work. I fit in playing when my boys play football. It is a great escape from work and provides a bit of time for me.
Who inspires you and why?
Judy Murray is someone which I have come to admire. She has always shown a determination not only to encourage her sons to be top athletes but works very hard in promoting sport to people of all levels .
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
One of my best achievements so far is taking part in 2 festivals .They both provided me with an opportunity to play with my club mates which was brilliant fun.
What are the 3 best things you love about netball? And the worst?!
Best- playing in a team, improves fitness and really good fun.
Worst - sore limbs the morning after, but not as much now .
If someone was thinking about taking up netball/BBN but doubted herself or felt unsure about being judged, what would you say to them?
If they ever loved playing a game of netball at any level but have stopped then join BBN as it all comes flooding back . If you fancy learning a new sport then this is the opportunity you should not ignore. It is great fun and played in positive atmosphere .All shapes ,sizes and ages all play together encouraging each other.
How would you describe/promote BBN?
It is fun way of playing a team sport which allows you to develop at your own pace. It is also a good laugh!
Do you have a sporting or life motto?
No matter how little you think you are doing is always more than sitting on the couch!
